Esports is on track to reach over $1 billion in ad revenue in less than 5 years. It’s expected to hit that mark by 2021, according to a report by IHS Markit. John McCarthy at The Drum expands on the numbers: “Ted Hall, research director for IHS Markit, said: ‘The rapid growth of eSports audiences has attracted some the industry’s largest media and technology companies to the genre, with the likes of Amazon and MTG acquiring key assets.'”
China is esports’ biggest consumer, with 11.1 billion streams in 2016 alone. The U.S. trailed at 2.7 billion streams, but esports video content hours viewed grew to 6 billion in 2016.
Roccat Studios is moving into games, starting with Sick City. It’s “a modern real-time tactical combat game,” Roccat explained, according to Kevin Parrish at Digital Trends. Up until now, Roccat has focused on high-quality gaming products like mice and keyboards. Now, the company will celebrate its 10th anniversary with Roccat Games Studio and Sick City.
