Space Ape Games now has a majority stakeholder. Supercell, the creator of Clash of Clans, bought 62% of the company for $55.8 million, according to Venture Beat’s Dean Takahashi. Space Ape Games is 5 years old, and will retain both its founders and the capacity to create whatever games it wants. “The structure is massively significant,” one Space Ape founder told Takahashi. “It’s a long-term partnership. It solve the challenge that creative industries face on how you consolidate an industry without breaking the thing you are consolidating. It allows us autonomy and independent ownership.”
Grand Theft Auto V is one of the best-selling games of all time, and it just topped 80 million copies sold. “Take-Two said that the game has moved 80 million units to retailers, including 5 million in the first three months of 2017. That number is ‘sold-in,’ which is copies sent to merchants,” Polygon’s Owen S. Good writes.
