“You think I’M bad, wait’ll you meet my lawyers!”
IN THE NEWS
What would Friday be without some buttery drama? Boring, that’s what. In this case, the drama is pretty darn dumb and involves the cesspool that is Twitter virtual signalling. Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson tweeted Thursday, “If you’re against the concept of a #HeterosexualPrideDay, you’re a complete fucking cunt and deserve to be shot.” He followed up with two tweets saying, “(By a photographer)” and “((With a gun)).”
First off, there’s no way Notch didn’t expect people to lose it over this tweet. Should they have lost it? No, because being proud of who you are should not be a controversial thing, although he did phrase the sentiment in a stupid manner (AKA leave out the guns, shooting and cursing bits).
Twitter proceeded to descend on him like a triggered horde and tried to label him as anti-LGBT. Outraged journalists frantically took to their keyboards to write angry opinion-pieces-painted-as-straight-news stories branding him as a homophobe. Clearly, he’s not, so everyone take a breath. Notch was making the point that it should be OK to celebrate being straight just as much as it should be OK to celebrate being anything else — because that’s the end goal of equality. Disliking the way he went about saying that does not negate or change it.
Let’s chill on the faux outrage and use our intelligence to think through what someone meant by something instead of succumbing to knee-jerk emotional reactions. Let’s also stop saying people deserve to be harmed.
