Newzoo’s 2020 Global Esports Market Report is out now, and it has some great insight for what to expect from the industry in the upcoming years. Their projected numbers include esports hitting $1 billion in revenue in 2020, an increase of $150 million year over year. Sponsorship dollars are the biggest slice of the pie coming in at a projected $636.9 million. Check out the full report for some great insights.
There has been a lot of worry surrounding the Mid-Season Invitational, one of League of Legends esports’ two annual international tournaments. Neither the date nor location of the event have been announced by Riot Games, but we just got our first official word as to why. John Needham released a statement that you can find here. Looks like the near future for LoL esports is iffy, just like many other games.
Valve is taking a look at the ecosystem for Dota 2. Starting after The International 10, Valve will introduce regional leagues. This new system will help competitive Dota be more scheduled and consistent, and help stabilize tier 2 and 3 teams. The year will be divided into three seasons, with 6 regions. Each season will culminate in a major, and at the end of the year everything, or course, concludes with The International. You can read the full update here.
