Grand Theft Auto IV and V’s modding tool, OpenIV, has been shut down due to legal threats by Take-Two Interactive. Community backlash has been fierce so far, with Reddit exploding with angry threads, users flooding Steam with negative reviews and calls for boycotts of Take-Two, 2K and Rockstar Games.
The company decided to shut down OpenIV because of GTA V online’s hacker community — OpenIV has stated that it will not fight the cease and desist.
Here’s the statement Rockstar Gaming sent to PC Gamer’s Christopher Livingston: “Take-Two’s actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players.”
